Notes
"* From "A Guide to Swedish Sites in Kanabec and Isanti Counties" text by Marilyn McGriff 1996: SOCIALIST CEMETERY - Known also as the ELM PARK CEMETERY, this small cemetery was established by a group of Swedish immigrants in the area who were involved in a Socialist club during the early years of the 20th century. Their clubhouse was nearby. The graves are indicated by cement pillars embossed with numbers, but the map identifying those buried there has been lost. Today, the cemetery stands abandoned, but it serves as a reminder of former political activities that were outside the mainstream of American life. Located two miles west of Highway 65 on the Old Grandy Road.
* Kirchner cemetery cards, MGS donation 2001 has noted file card: "was this cemetery uprooted by road ? bodies moved? - no stones here but there are bricks and lot marks. Talked to Chas F. Schwartz, R.R. Stanchfield, he said Long family buried there. No burials after 1885. REUBEN LONG, Grasston, mother born there and 2 children who died in forest fire about 1883-1885, small pox epidemic 1885. Area of about 200 feet deep has 32-36 post lot mkrs - all begin at roadside, cem was about 2 acres. Were bodies moved when road was built? Jardin might know, Vic Larson at Cambridge in duplex might know or Josie Swanson at Golf Course."
* 27 August 2002, Jodi Magnuson's visit to Elm Park: The cemetery had only one stone visible. It looked to be a concrete brick. There were flowers and someone had recently mowed. So someone is keeping track of the cemetery.

(August 2002) Transcribed from a typed paper found in the files of the Isanti County Historical Society. It is has a handwritten note in the upper right hand corner saying ""1975 Confidential"" SOCIALIST CEMETERY Elm Park Community Stanchfield Township Isanti County Minnesota Directions to cemetery: From County Road #6, drive north for two miles on County Road #24. Travel east for 1/4 mile on Township Road. The cemetery is located in the woods east of the line fence. The cemetery plot is completely overgrown with underbrush but can be found in the north-west corner of the woods. Persons interviewed: Raymond ERICKSON, Stanchfield Township Elmer BECKMAN, Stanchfield Township Victor E. LARSON, 612 SW 3, Cambridge, Mn. George BERG, 600 Bean, Mora, Mn. Randolph JOHNSON, Cambridge, Mn. I was advised to interview Vernon GERDIN who lives in the area of the cemetery, but I did not interview him. Late in the month of July 1974, Randolph JOHNSON and I went in search of and found a small cemetery known as The Socialist Cemetery. Randolph JOHNSON states that some people preferred to refer to the cemetery as ""The non-believers cemetery."" When I visited with Elmer BECKMAN on August 14, 1974, Beckman stated that he had never heard of it referred to as a Socialist Cemetery before. BECKMAN did say that his father was one of the founders of the society and he pointed out that the north wing of his farmhouse was originally the Socialist Hall and was moved one-fourth mile to his farm where today it serves as part of his home. All others, when interviewed, referred to the cemetery as ""The Socialist Cemetery."" BECKMAN confirmed that there wee many Socialists in the Elm Park community, his parents, the Louis BECKMANS, among them. JOHNSON and I were quite sure that we had found the cemetery when we found two small concrete markers measuring about 10"" x 4"" x 2"", with two numbers embossed upon each. Mr. Victor E. LARSON, whom I interviewed the following week, confirmed that his uncle, Mr. Ole LARSON made the markers and also a map or plat of the cemetery. LARSON remembered that his uncle once was in possession of the map but he had no idea where the map might be today. The cemetery is located on land once owned by Louis L. LONG Mr. Raymond ERICKSON, whose family was never associated with the Socialist, thought that Louis LONG and his wife were buried in the cemetery, however, George BERG stated that the wife of Louis LONG is buried there along with Louis LONG's father. Where Louis LONG is buried is not known. The LONGS were the parents of Winfield ANDERSON'S mother, but I have not interviewed Winfield ANDERSON. In regards to those buried in the cemetery, BERG confirmed that his still-born sister was buried in the cemetery by his father, Andrew BERG. In addition to his sister, BERG thought that Louis LONG's father was buried there along with Louis LONG's wife and a Miss MOORE who was in some way related to the LONG family. [end of paper] Transcription of a handwritten 2 page paper, dated 1-18-75: :Comments re: Socialist Cemetery evoked by article in newsletter, Isanti County Historical Society. Albin FORSBERG, Braham, MN (age 80+?) Remembers visiting cemetery about 1920-1925 - though there were at least 6 graves. FORSBERG attended many dances at the Socialist Hall. He stated their philosophy was ""Share and share alike."" Mrs. George NEDIN [hard to read the last name, maybe MEDIN] (age 85?) Believes at least 6 or more buried in the Socialist Cemetery - remembers the cemetery was always covered with Brush- wooden grave markers. People buried without ceremony. Believes those buried include Andrew BERG'S baby; 3 yr old baby girl of Mr. & Mrs. Erick PETERSON (Mrs. PETERSON formerly a GERDIN girl); a Mr. MILLER; the Clarence WISTROM baby; certain kin of Louis LONG (probably Louis LONG's father and Louis LONG's wife); Possibly Gust RUDEN. Others who may have info re Socialist Society. Mrs. Clause LUND, Springvale (niece of Ole LARSON)) Jose SWANSON (Albin FORSBERG's sister). Ole LAWRENCE supposed to have made cemetery markers and map. List of those reported to have been buried in the Socialist Cemetery: 1. BERG baby - still born - Parents: Andrew BERG and wife. Confirmed by George BERG, brother of the stillborn baby). 2. Gust RUDEN - (""possibly buried there"" Mrs. George MEDIN) 3. Baby Girl (age 3) daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Erick PETERSON. Mrs. PETERSON WAS GERDIN girl. Confirmed by Geo. BERG, Mrs. Modine, Elmer BECKMAN. 4. WISTROM, baby, Parents: Clarence WISTROM. Believed to be buried there according to Ro... FORSBERG. 5. Mr. MILLER -reported by Mrs. Geo Medin. 6. Louis LONG's father 7. Louis LONGS' wife (confirmed by ??? and Elmer BECKMAN 8. Miss MOORE (related to Louis LONG family. Believed to be buried there according to Geo. BERG. ----------- 13 December 2004. Phone call from Kriste Ericsson of the Isanti County Historical Society. She is looking for information about who owns the property now. She told me that she thought that the Rasmusson family might own it, from information on a recent plat map. They would like to clean it up and include it in their "Peony Progression - Cemetery Visitation" in spring 2005. She had also heard that someone had gone through the cemetery and pulled up all the numbered markers and piled them up by a tree."

* From "Isanti County Minnesota, an Illustrated History" by Vernon Bergstrom & Marilyn McGriff. c1985. (church history): LONG LAKE LUTHERAN CHURCH - Organized in 1891. Church built in 1892. Began as the Bradford Evangelical Lutheran Church and changed name in 1935. Congregation actually started in Anoka County at St. Francis Lutheran (1870) but population growth to the north led to the formation of the Long Lake church. The St. Francis church was torn down in 1917. Long Lake was affiliated with Faith of Isanti until 1965.
* From "A Guide to Swedish Sites in Kanabec and Isanti Counties" text by Marilyn McGriff 1996: LONG LAKE LUTHERAN CHURCH -Known during its early days as the Swedish Lutheran Evangelical Church of Bradford, this congregation was organized in 1891 as an outgrowth of one at St. Francis in Anoka County. In 1935 the name was changed to reflect its location near Long Lake. For a number of years the church shared pastors with the Athens/Faith congregation. Icon paintings in the church's narthex commemorate a two-year pastoral exchange in the 1980's when Long Lake pastor, Paul HAMMER, served a church in Kalmar, Sweden, and a pastor from Sweden's Lutheran church, Stig DEMKER, served the Long Lake congregation. Located on at Highway 47 and 277th Ave. NW. (763-444-5315)
* From web page ( http://longlakeluth.org/ (April 2003) ) : Long Lake Lutheran Church began as a congregation on September 10, 1891, when 13 Swedish immigrant families began meeting at the home of Andrew Lindman. Rev. Tornell of Anoka was asked to preach every sixth Sunday to "The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Bradford, Isanti County, Minnesota". Eventually a 40 x 30 foot building with four windows on each side was constructed. In 1913 a bell tower was added with a bell donated by the church's Young People's Society, which today continues to proclaim the start of worship. In 1924 The Rev. August Lundquist confirmed the first class in English. In 1937, after many changes and much growth, the congregation voted to become Long Lake Lutheran Church. Today our congregation continues to grow and flourish in numbers and spirit. Through trust and assurance that God will lead us all the way, we strive to accommodate the needs of our church family, reach out to the community, and fulfill our Mission Statement: "Following Christ's example of love and forgiveness, we open our hearts and doors to reach out to all people as we proclaim the gospel and grow in Christ's love."

* From BEECHER: The oldest headstone is that of Olof (11/27/1844-11/28/1911) and Christina RUNNING (8/24/1850-1/11/1899).
* Kirchner cemetery cards, MGS donation 2001 has nine cards on file for Carmel Baptist. Also noted that this cemetery has no name posted. This cemetery is 2 1/3 miles north of 95, 1 mile west of 47, near creamery on the blacktop, in section 12. of Wyanett twp. [Jodi's note: looks like it could be the Oak Knoll Cemetery by its location]
* 14 October 2002: Jodi Magnuson's visit to the cemetery, "There is a small wire fence in front of the cemetery with 2 white posts. It is in a very wooded area and I only counted 6 upright stones." 28 April 2003 - I spoke with Donald Thompson (763-389-2649), the sexton for the Wyanett Free Church Cemetery. He doesn't think that there has been a burial in the Oak Knoll Cemetery for at least 30 years or so. (From the ICHS transcription it looks as if the last burial may have been 1952). Donald is not sure who has the records for this cemetery. He thought it may be at the Isanti County Court House.

In 1907 the grounds were systematically plotted with the help of Pastor RENIUS. It is renowned as a most beautiful rural cemetery and credit for this must be given to our foresighted members who at an early date established perpetual care and other governing regulations. In recent years the late Edwin JOHNSON, and his brother Elmer contributed toward its beauty as caretakers and it is now ably cared for by John SPLETTSTOESSER. In 1958 Edwin Johnson was given recognition for his twenty years of faithful service. Memorial services are held each June when the peonies are at the height of their bloom The earliest burial recorded were in 1880. Marie O. OLSON was laid to rest in September and Ida C. LOFGREN in October. Nels PERSON and Karl WALQUIST are registered earlier in the book, but no dates are available. There have been 897 burials through April 28, 1969."

* From "A Guide to Swedish Sites in Kanabec and Isanti Counties" text by Marilyn McGriff 1996: SWEDISH MISSION CHURCH OF SOUTH MAPLE RIDGE - Regular services were discontinued at this church in the 1940's, but the building still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It serves as an example of small rural churches that grew out of the reform movement protesting the formalism of the more dominant Swedish Lutheran church. Organized in 1884, the congregation held services and Sunday School in members' homes. They were never large enough to afford a full-time pastor, but the building was constructed in 1897. A cemetery still serves area residents with ties to the Swedish Mission congregation. Located just south of the junction of County Roads 1 and 3, six miles west of Stanchfield.

The first funeral service held in the newly built church was that of Lilly Brandt's father's first wife, Mrs. Forsell, in the winter of 1889. In July of 1885 Mr. and Mrs. Hans Forsell deeded the cemetery property to the church for $1.00. Two months late it was deeded to a cemetery association and in 1899 was again deeded back to the church trustees who were at that time, C.F. Sandstrom, O.J. Olson and P.J. Peterson. Built a bigger church on 40 acres donated by the railroad in 1876 and expanded in 1893. A fire in 1917 destroyed the church but it was rebuilt of red brick. Another fire in 1930 left just the exterior walls standing so the building was restored. An entirely new church was constructed in 1966.
* From "A Guide to Swedish Sites in Kanabec and Isanti Counties" text by Marilyn McGriff 1996: STANCHFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH AND CEMETERY -Immigrants from Orsa in Dalarna founded this church in the mid-1860's. The book Svärmarna (Swedes of Vision) is a fictionalized account of the church founders' discontent with the Swedish state church and their subsequent decision to leave Sweden. While the current building (constructed in 1966) is a modern edifice, the cemetery reflects the Swedish heritage. For a time, the congregation had a satellite building a few miles south. That building now serves as the home of the Grandy Crafts & Treasures. The Spring Vale Baptist Church also grew out of the Stanchfield parish. Located in the town of Stanchfield. 320-396-3391.

There is a house on both sides of the church and the cemetery is not visible from the church. I was told it is to the south of the church on the same side of the road as the church."

From Highway 95 in Cambridge, head north on Highway 65 for 9.5 miles. Take 107, which splits to the left from Highway 65. About a mile up the road, past Jamestown (66), take a left onto Southview. The cemetery sits next the brick church.
Notes
** 25 April 2003 - phone call to the church, the secretary says that there are about 35 or 40 graves in this cemetery, which is only about 20 years old. The church keeps the records.

* From the 'Isanti County Township Maps of 1898', reprinted in 1987 by Isanti County Historical Society: "CEMETERY, section 34 (No longer exists), Isanti Township" From the plat map, it looks to sit just north of the Chas. Lundgren farm house. From the 1999 plat map, the modern roads would be at 281St Avenue and Bataan Street NE, south of Highway 55.
